So the blogging has been pushed to the side a bit while the marathon that is cooking for Thanksgiving begins. Actually, it began months ago when I planted the butternut squash, collards, and herbs anticipating this feast of feasts. Like everyone else, I did have to brave the grocery stores over the past few days to gather the fixings and pick up my fresher than fresh turkey from McDonald Farm. I'm really trying to make this as locally-grown a feast as possible.
I joined the madness that is Wegman's today when I went shopping for things I didn't get at the Co-op . I found myself on a wild search for heavy cream--it was sold out at three major supermarkets (Wegmans, Price Chopper and P&C ) only to circle back to the Co-op to buy out the last 5 half pints of the Byrne Dairy cream--what is up, people? I've never seen cream sell out before--pehaps a sign of the wild abandon with which folks are approaching the holiday.
So here's the menu--photos of the finished meal to come. I'm actually making the rich turkey stock right now and am finishing up the cornbread that will go into the stuffing. I'll also make the cake tonight to free up the oven for the big bird.
This menu reflects a combination of old family favorites and new (to us) dishes.
Parmesan Fritters--just 'cause they're yummy
Maple Glazed Herb Roasted Turkey with Maple Gravy--we roast the turkey completely wrapped in foil--makes an incredible juicy bird
Mashed Butternut Squash--this is actually like having dessert for dinner
Mashed Potatoes with Chives--we gotta have the mashed potatoes
Caramalized Carrots
Collard Greens
Cornbread, Apple, Sausage Stuffing--I've been making this Silver Palate recipe for 15 years
Bacon Biscuits--two of my favorite foods, couldn't resist
Cheesecake--Mom's famous--and she's going to be with us too
Golden Cake with Chocolate Creme Fraiche Frosting--I could eat this whole thing by myself, it is addictive!
Yum Yum. Sounds Terrific!!! When you get time, can you post recipes (if they are not secret family recipes) to some of the dishes, especially the Parmesan Fritters. Happy Thanksgiving to You & Your Family!!!
